Photographic Tip Number 12

Winter can be a fabulous time for photography. Despite the cold, which I must admit I’m not a fan of, the light can be great, you don’t need to get up at silly times of the day and dusk comes early. Just remember your gloves, warm weather gear and that things like batteries run down more quickly in the cold.

Richmond Park - with the sun being so low in the sky, you can get some fabulous light.

If you are really lucky, it might even snow. Of course, north of the Midlands, this can happen more often than if like me, you live in London. The blue hour can really be something and again, 7am doesn’t feel that bad.

With the light being so low for longer, you can capture nature in some wonderful backlit conditions.

Remember to try and place your subject in the best spot to be seen, away from the clutter of the background. Of course, your chosen subject may not give you that choice.

Winter is also a good time to try out your black & white skills, here up on Putney Heath.

and don’t forget to make the most of some exciting props that you can introduce at this time of year, like blocks of ice, which can be really fun.

If we are lucky, we may yet get another cold spell, so be ready and enjoy your photography.

If you’d like any help please get in touch, as besides running my own local group (The Putney & Barnes Satellite group for London Independent Photography), I am always available for some one to one tuition.
